Pinto Beans

Phaseolus vulgaris

Pinto Beans are an ancient bean native to South America.  The word "pinto" means "painted" in Spanish, taking its name from the pinto horse.  These types of beans are the most popular bean variety in the United States.  They are primarily grown in Colorado, Nebraska, North Dakota and Minnesota.

Medium sized and squarish oval in shape, these beans have a tan background with freckled pattern in pinkish-brown color.  Their earthy and full body flavor is well complemented by their mealy texture.  Good substitutes for Pinto Beans are Kidney Beans as they are closely related to each other.

Famous for its zesty "South of the Border" uses, this ever popular bean plays an important part in tacos, burritos, tostadas, and chili.  Pinto beans are also commonly found in American Southwest cuisine.
