Black Beans

Phaseolus vulgaris

Black Beans are medium-sized, black-skinned oval beans.  They are also known as black turtle beans, Spanish or Mexican black beans.  These beans have a matte black color with a small white line only on the ridge of the beam and the inside of the black bean is cream colored.  A favorite in South and Central American and Caribbean cuisine black beans are the basis for Brazil's once-weekly traditional national dish  - feijoada.

Originally grown as the "New World Bean" in the Caribbean, this variety is rapidly growing in popularity across the country it is traditionally used in Latin American, Caribbean and Mexican dishes.  Black beans are also an exciting addition to chili and makes and attractive side dish.

Black beans are used in Cuban black soup with rum and "Moros y Cristianos" (Moors and Christians) - white rice and black beans.  

These beans are low in fat, high in fiber and are friendly to the digestive system.

Michigan grows the majority of Black Beans with New York and some of the western states also contributing.
